On Greatness

What is the meaning of life? Many people before me explored the answer to this question.
There is no consensus yet though. If there were a consensus, we would teach that insight to our youth and everybody would pursue meaning in life and no-one would have maladies like anxiety.
So what’s up?
The thing is that meaning differs from person to person. Although there are universal activities that provide meaning to life, such as helping to those in need, or sharing intimate moments with close friends, the big chunk of meaning has to come from somewhere else, potentially your inner self.
What is it? Although, I can’t claim to have found the universal answer, at least I know the answer for myself.
The meaning of life for me is to be great. To be among greats. To realize my potential. And to have no regrets when I die.
What does this mean?
It means to have a level of excellence in my field, which can parallel to that of Ryuichi Sakamoto in music or Max Verstappen in racing.
It means, to choose a field and be the best at it. And the field for me at the moment is software.
Some might say, this is an arduous task to be as good as Max Verstappen. But those would be missing a point. Here, we have the freedom to choose the field. And this field does not have to be a money-generating field.
However, in order to be the best at something, you need to be in love with the field. Otherwise, it is indeed an arduous task. Do you know anyone who is at the top of their field, although they don’t like what they are doing?
This is liberating. Why?
Because you get to choose the field. You write the rules. You play at your home turf. Let it be bee-keeping or rheumatology, whatever it is, be the best at what you are doing.
And this my friends, the struggle to be the best, not the end goal itself, is the meaning of life.
